Like all other Duolingo courses, the new Japanese course is available for free. ![]() That’s a common Japanese expression that translates to “wanting something so badly, your hand comes out of your throat.” It’s just about how direly millions of Duolingo users have clamored for a Japanese course, which launched Thursday on iOS. Users have to use multiple apps or different versions of the same app in order to learn how to read, write, pronounce all three alphabets.喉から手が出る (nodo kara te ga deru).The is little to no focus on user onboarding and those that had no prior experience learning Japanese found it overwhelming or confusing.The apps often did not include stroke order for kana (both hiragana and katakana) or kanji.Users had to find external sources in order to learn how to write.Some apps make the assumption that users are already familiar with the Japanese alphabets.Considering users’ main motivations for learning Japanese and the apps that are popularly used, I discovered some major pain points: Additionally, users stressed that grammar, reading, and writing, were the three most important aspects for them in learning Japanese. I found that most people surveyed used Duolingo everyday or almost everyday, as well as used mnemonic devices to assist in memorizing the alphabets. In order to understand target users, I surveyed six people who had studied Japanese for varied amounts of time from 1 week to 2 years, in regards to how they used apps to supplement their Japanese learning, and what methods they used outside of app usage. ![]()
